Aircrafts?

by Zekrish Thu Jan 17, 2019 1:52 pm
So during my Frankan campaign I envisioned the floating Field Hospital Mercure a retrofitted Hercules class (or similar flying fortress) style plane. This raised the question among my players if functioning aircraft exist in degenesis since such marvels as subs, tanks, catamaran and locomotive exist and function. They would surely be a rare occurrence but it does beg the question of why some expeditions and combat (especially bombing sporefields from crude planes) isn't aerial.

Tl;dr: are there any mentions in the source material about aircrafts and why they are used/not used?

It's due to heavy atmospheric turbulences, caused by the Eshaton in the first place... plus lost technical know-how. At least that's how I explain it to my players. I'm not aware of any officially written explanation, but I believe Marko explained it by himself somewhere.
On the other side, it's your game and I somehow like your envision of a crude glider or small motorized aircraft...or it could well be a Macguffin for another game session.

Is there a link to Marko's explanation? I'm just curious about it now.

Yep, found it: Marko's Q&A, https://www.degenesis-cluster.com/download - p. 12

"The majority of planes that might
have been in the air at some point came
down with electrostatic impulses that fried
the atmosphere, and pyroclastic blasts from
the Eshaton itself. The Hellvetics might have
a few functioning helicopters stored away
deep in the Alpine Fortress, waiting for the
right mission to use them, but in general,
flying machines have been out of order for a
few hundred years. But if you need to have
a Zeppelin, Doubledecker, Fighter jet in your
campaign for flavor, be my guest. It’s just not
a thing in the official story."

It couldn't be impossible, actually, to rig together a basic airplane, that's pretty much what everyone did until the 20s and a World War was fought with semi-artisanal flying apparatuses tied together with glue and piano string! And it could be a great plot element for a long lasting game, be it that a bunch of adventurers are running all around what used to be Europe to gather spare parts, or that they took off and crashed in foreign land, or that a man with a sick kid has heard of some crazy guy in the mountains who jury-rigged a plane and races agaisnt time to hitch a ride on the airplane and fly towards a settlement where one of the last actual doctors lives...
